The Antipodes
Sound Designer
In The Antipodes, there were two worlds I was building with sound. There was the world that was grounded in the reality that the characters are living in, and there was the mystical storytelling world. Much of the play is with these writers sitting around a table in a conference room in an office building, a world full of the sounds of phones ringing, doors slamming distantly, elevator doors dinging. Then there's the world created in these writers' stories, many of them very mythological and less grounded. Those stories were underscored with a mixture of guitars and gamelan music. A thrust formation gave freedom with speaker placement, and I utilized this by having a couple of speakers more in the direction of the office space where the office building sounds came from, and then the score of the world of storytelling came through speakers that were behind the sections of the audience.Video samples of these designs are available on request.
Additionally, given that the play is about the writing and telling of stories the audience heard stories from the moment they walked through the door from a preshow playlist full of songs that tell a complete story within them.
